Both are criticising aspects of the Venezuela vote that have long been true in Mozambique, and they have always accepted Frelimo victories. They say Venezuela’s election is not valid because it does not publish results down to polling station level, but Mozambique does not do this either. Venezuela’s result cannot be “verified” says the US, but the Mozambican CNE changes result in secret so these cannot be verified.
Will the US and EU now apply the same standards to 9 October elections in Mozambique as they have in Venezuela?
