According to recent media reports, the Public Prosecutor's Office decided to refrain from accusing the accused of mismanagement of Banco Austral, a process that was finally underway following a forensic audit that found strong evidence of fraudulent administration. As is well known, the ruinous management of Banco Austral was the motive behind the assassination of former CEO António Siba Siba Macuacua, appointed by the Bank of Mozambique in 2001 to go manage the “Austral” after discovering his financial debacle. An abstention order was issued by the prosecutor in the case in early April 2010, deciding not to charge the Mozambican administrators, but charging, in an autonomous process, the former Malaysian administrators.
