Since the time when the current government took over this part, three increases in electricity tariffs have already been made. This means that since 2014 the cost of electricity has already increased by more than 200% for large consumers and around 120% for domestic consumers1. However, the intervention of the body which, although it does not have the function of regulating the electricity sector, has some competences of a regulatory authority in the sector, has never been seen.
Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) intervenes in the market in the areas of distribution and commercialization of electricity and, at the same time, defines the energy tariffs to be applied to consumers. This means that it acts as a referee and player with regard to the distribution and commercialization of electricity.
